Apply for a provisional passport

Duration of validity

A temporary passport is issued with a maximum validity of 1 year and cannot be renewed.

Issuance before the age of 18

Passports for underage children can only be applied for with a declaration of consent (incl. a copy of the identity card or passport for signature comparison) of the custodial parent. Furthermore, proof of custody is mandatory in the case of sole custody or in the case of unmarried parents (judgment of the family court, negative certificate or custody certificate from the Youth Welfare Office).

If the child has not yet reached the age of 18, the presence of the child and a custodial parent is mandatory when applying.

Loss, theft

The loss or theft of a valid passport must be reported in writing or in person. If the police have already been notified, please bring the duplicate with you.

Application

In principle, the application is only possible at the passport office of the main residence. Personal appearance is required for the application. When applying for a passport for persons under the age of 18, the presence of the child and a parent with custody is mandatory.

Duration of production

The temporary passport will be issued immediately.

Issue / collection

If you are in possession of an old passport that has not yet been validated, it must be presented for validation when you pick up your new passport. The passport is always issued to the person applying for it. Only in the case of persons under 18 years of age or persons who are incapable of acting will the passport be issued to the legal representative, legal guardian or authorised agent.

If the passport is not handed over immediately upon application, it will be issued at the central registration desk on the ground floor of Löbdergraben 12.

• Identity/Naming: To establish your identity, please bring your current (or, if applicable, expired) identity card. To verify your name, please bring a current civil status certificate (original!). Depending on your marital status, this can be a birth certificate or a marriage certificate (book of the family also possible). The presentation of current civil status certificates is required within the framework of the completion of the civil register according to § 3 Federal Registration Act for data comparison as well as for the addition of missing data.
• Photo: Please bring a new (not older than 3 months!), biometric photo. The picture must be 3.5x4.5 cm in size.
• Proof of urgency (e.g. booking confirmation)
