What does a materials tester actually do?

Time
18:00 - 24:00 o'clock
Organizer
ifw Jena – Günter-Köhler-Institut für Fügetechnik und Werkstoffprüfung GmbH
Place
ifw Jena
Adresse
Ernst-Ruska-Ring 3

Materials testers examine the quality of components and joints such as weld seams.

It is their responsibility to decide whether certain production processes and materials are suitable for manufacturing stable bridge piers, for example. Various test methods are used to determine the different properties of a material. Components can be X-rayed to make their interior visible, samples are examined for their chemical composition using various methods and in destructive tests, for example, weld seams are stressed until they fail to check their strength.

During the Long Night of Science, you and your children can take on the tasks of a materials tester and get to know the test methods. You can get up close and personal and take part in pressure tests and radiographic tests.

By the way: We train materials testers specializing in metal at ifw Jena. We will be happy to tell you more about the training during the Long Night of Science!
