Driving license - extension classes A, A2, A1, B, BE, AM, L, T

Prerequisites

You have your main place of residence in Jena. You are of the required minimum age or will reach it in the near future.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the card driver's license contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

Apply online

You also have the option of applying online for an extension to categories A, A2, A1, B, BE, AM, L, T at the driving license authority. To do this, please have your old driver's license ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly.

To ensure that your application is processed quickly and smoothly, it is advantageous to enter your e-mail address and telephone number on the application form when submitting your application. This allows us to shorten the information process.

When is it not an extension?

It is not an extension if two or more classes are applied for at the same time, but the practical examination for the individual classes is taken on different days.

In practice, this sometimes occurs when an application is made for a motorcycle category in addition to another category and both practical tests cannot be taken on the same date, e.g. due to weather conditions.

As the theory test is valid for 12 months, it is possible that there is a longer period of time between the individual practical tests for the categories applied for.

• The application should be submitted at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
• Once your documents have been checked, we will issue the test order to the test organization. Your driving school will be notified and can then register you for the test. The processing time for your application is approx. 4 weeks.
• The theory test may be taken at the earliest three months before you reach the minimum age. The practical test may only be taken after you have passed the theory test and at the earliest one month before you reach the minimum age.
• The practical test for the extension from category A1 to category A2 or from category A2 to category A may be taken at the earliest one month before the expiry of the period of two years after the issue of the category A1 or A2 driving license or when the minimum age specified in § 10 Paragraph 1 FeV is reached.
• Once you have passed the practical test, the examiner will issue you with a provisional certificate of driving authorization and confiscate your old driver's license. The testing organization will inform us that you have passed the test. We will then order your driving license from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The driving license will be sent to you directly by post (the cost of postage cannot be avoided).

• Passport or identity card
• Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
• Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request the file card copy yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax. If you still have an old driving license (grey/pink), you must also apply to exchange it for the new card driving license when you apply for a driving license for passenger transport. In this case, please note the information on "Exchange to the EU card driver's license".
• Proof of driving licenses issued in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982 ("VK 30" index card)
• Confirmation from the driving school where you registered
• Proof of sufficient eyesight: certificate from an optician or ophthalmologist
• Proof of participation in a first aid course in accordance with § 19 FeV
• Applications for minors can only be submitted with a declaration of consent from the custodial parent (including copies of identity card or passport for signature comparison). If necessary, proof of custody is mandatory in the case of sole custody or unmarried parents (judgment of the family court, negative certificate or custody certificate from the youth welfare office).

The fee includes the cost of a driving license. If you are applying for several categories, it may be necessary for you to obtain several provisional proofs of driving authorization or driving licenses for the respective categories you have obtained by the time you take the final test. This would incur additional fees.
