Gravesites
Here you can find information about the various burial sites.
The municipal cemeteries are available to anyone who has died in Jena and, with justified interest, to those who have died elsewhere.
As the main cemetery, the North Cemetery offers a total of 15 different types of grave.
The smaller cemeteries in the districts offer a limited range of burial sites, and some district cemeteries are reserved for local residents.
Forms of burial
A distinction is made between burial and cremation.
- Burial is the burial of the deceased in a coffin.
- In a cremation, the ashes of the deceased are buried in an urn.
Urn burials are possible in all cemeteries, but burial in the ground is restricted by the sometimes unfavorable (hydrogeological) properties of the soil.

Elective burial sites |
Elective burial sites are available in various sizes for burials and urn burials. The number of possible burials depends on the size of the grave space. Urns can also be buried in burial plots. The right of use can be extended several times. The right of use can be extended for the last time by five years after the right of rest of the last possible burial has expired. |

Urn niches |
Urns are buried above ground in urn niches in the columbarium. The name and dates of life are placed on the sealing plate. Two urns can be buried in one urn niche. No grave maintenance is necessary or possible. For further information on urn burials, please refer to the flyer "Burial options at the North Cemetery". |

Care graves |
Care graves are elective urn graves for two urn burials, which are planted with ground cover and maintained by the staff of the municipal cemeteries. You can discuss the choice of gravestone design with the cemetery administration. The relatives are not obliged to maintain the grave. Vases with cut flowers can of course be placed at the gravesite. |

Tree gravesites |
At the North Cemetery there is the option of burying urns in a natural setting. There is a choice of communal trees or individual trees for four urns. If a decorative urn is used, it can only be made of wood or felt. Eight tree graves for two urns each are located in a circle around newly planted trees. Small gravestones can be erected here and the gravesite can be planted by relatives. |

Urn communal facilities |
Communal urns are only available at the North Cemetery. In the communal urn burial site with name plaque, 50 names and the dates of life of the people buried there are inscribed on a bronze plaque. It can take three to four months to install the plaque as it is cast in one piece. In the case of the urn community without naming, the burial is not marked by name. The burial procedure is identical for both urn communities A single, individual funeral service is of course possible in advance. The urn communal area is maintained by the staff of the Jena municipal cemeteries. Cut flowers can be laid by the relatives. Please do not enter the burial area. |

Islamic burial ground |
Graves for the deceased of the Muslim faith have been set up in a special burial ground at the North Cemetery. Burials there are in accordance with Islamic beliefs. The graves are aligned so that the deceased are buried facing Mecca. Special customs include ritual ablution, open-air prayers for the dead and burial without a coffin, if this has been approved as an exception. A prerequisite for burial in this burial ground is the approval of a local Islamic association. |

Design options for gravesites
The municipal cemeteries offer a wide range of options for burial, type of grave, location and design of the grave.
The alternative to the urn community is the horticulturally maintained ash tree plot/care grave at the North Cemetery. A memorial with names and dates of life for up to two deceased persons marks the place of burial.
Naturally, burial graves are available in various locations and sizes.
The staff at the cemetery administration will be happy to answer any questions and help you make the right choice.
Design regulations
The cemeteries and their burial plots are subject to various design regulations (Annex 3 of the cemetery statutes). In the grave fields with special design regulations, the size of the gravestone and possibly the type of stone are prescribed. In the burial areas with general design regulations, there are no strict dimensional requirements for the gravestone, and it is also possible to place grave borders here.
