Smell and taste laboratory: What is behind the smells and tastes that surround us in everyday life? How good is your nose - playful guessing of scents and tastes / Create your own perfume

"A hundred thousand scents seemed worth nothing before this one scent" - Patrick Süskind, "Perfume"

Mix your own individual perfume under the expert guidance of analytical chemists. Discover your analytical skills with your nose and mouth and explore your sense of smell and taste in our chemistry workshop. Learn interesting facts about the smells and tastes of chemical compounds that we encounter in everyday life. Whether perfume or floral scent, whether bitter substance or chocolate flavor, molecules are responsible for the tastes and smells, which often convey the impression to our brain in complicated mixtures.

In a taste laboratory, you can use dilution experiments to explore how sensitively your sense of taste reacts to certain substances. In our smell lab, you can creatively mix your own perfume to see how even the addition of a trace of an odorant changes the overall impression of a mixture. You can of course take your own cocktail of scented oils home with you. Your olfactory memory is also put to the test: try to recognize familiar scents and tastes and assign the molecules behind them.

And for the curious, the question of what is behind the smell of the oceans will be answered? In our laboratory, you can observe the tiny inhabitants of the ocean - microalgae - under the microscope. These microalgae can be found everywhere in the sea. They are responsible for oxygen production on earth and produce the molecules that make up the typical smell of the sea.
