Driving licence - extension classes A, A2, A1, B, BE, AM, L, T

Requirements

You have your main residence in Jena. You have the necessary minimum age or will reach it in a time near to the examination.

Application

A representation for the application is not possible, since the card driver's license contains your signature, which must already be made with the application. You do not have to fill in an application form. It will be prepared by us and only signed by you.

Apply online

You also have the option of applying online to the driving licence authority for an extension to include classes A, A2, A1, B, BE, AM, L and T. To do this, please keep your old driving licence with you. To do this, please have your old driving licence ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly.

For a quick and smooth processing of your application, it is advantageous to indicate your e-mail address and telephone number on the application form. This will allow us to shorten the information process.

When is it not an extension?

It is not a case of extension if the granting of two or even more classes is applied for at the same time, but the practical examination for the individual classes is taken on different days.

In practice, this sometimes happens when the granting of a motorcycle class is applied for in addition to another class and both practical examinations cannot be taken on the same date, e.g. for weather reasons.

As the theoretical test has a validity period of 12 months, it is possible that there is a longer period between the individual practical tests of the classes applied for.

  • The application should be submitted at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
  • Once your documents have been checked, we will issue the test order to the test organisation. Your driving school will be informed and can then register you for the test. The processing time for your application is approx. 4 weeks.
  • The theoretical test may be taken at the earliest three months before you reach the minimum age. The practical test may only be taken after passing the theoretical test and at the earliest one month before reaching the minimum age.
  • The practical test for the extension of class A1 to class A2 or class A2 to class A may be taken at the earliest one month before the expiry of the period of 2 years after the granting of the driving licence of class A1 or A2 or on reaching the minimum age specified in § 10 paragraph 1 FeV.
  • After you have passed the practical test, the examiner will issue you with a provisional proof of driving entitlement and confiscate your old driving licence. The examining organisation will inform us that you have passed the test. We will then order your driving licence from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The driving licence will be sent to you directly by post (the cost of postage cannot be avoided).
  • Passport or identity card
  • Photo: Please bring a photo that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The picture must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm. You can find out what the picture must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links).
  • Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, an index card copy of the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is necessary. Please request the copy of the index card yourself from the responsible driving licence authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax. If you still have an old driving licence (grey/pink), you must apply for the new licence at the same time as you apply for a driving licence for the carriage of passengers. In this case, please note the information on "Exchange for the EU driving licence card".
  • Proof of driving licence issuance (index card "VK 30") for issuance in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982
  • Confirmation from the driving school you registered with
  • Proof of adequate eyesight: certificate from an optician or ophthalmologist
  • Proof of participation in a training course in first aid in the sense of § 19 FeV
  • Applications for minors can only be submitted with a declaration of consent from the custodial parent (including copies of identity card or passport for signature comparison). If necessary, proof of custody is mandatory in the case of sole custody or in the case of unmarried parents (judgment of the family court, negative certificate or custody certificate from the youth welfare office).
