Accompanied driving from 17

With the aim of reducing the accident rate among young novice drivers in particular, the model of accompanied driving (BF17, driving license at 17) has now become successfully established.

The aim is to develop driving routines and skills under protected conditions in order to reduce the number of young people involved in road traffic accidents.

Prerequisites

You have your main place of residence in Jena. You are of the required minimum age or will reach it in the near future.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the card driver's license contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

Apply online

You can also submit the application for accompanied driving from the age of 17 to the driving license authority online.

Requirements for an accompanying person

The accompanying person

  • must have reached the age of 30,
  • must have held a valid category B driver's license for at least five years; the driver's license must be evidenced by a valid driver's license, which must be carried during the escort and handed over to persons authorized to monitor road traffic on request,
  • must not have more than one point in the central traffic register at the time of applying for the driving license.

The accompanying person may not accompany the holder of the test certificate if they have

  • has 0.25 mg/l or more alcohol in the breath or 0.5 per mille or more alcohol in the blood or an amount of alcohol in the body that leads to such a breath or blood alcohol concentration,
  • is under the influence of an intoxicating substance listed in Annex § 24 a of the Road Traffic Act

An effect within the meaning of sentence 1 no. 2 exists if a substance specified in the Annex to Section 24a of the Road Traffic Act is detected in the blood. Sentence 1 no. 2 does not apply if the substance originates from the intended use of a drug prescribed for a specific medical condition.

Joint preparation with the novice driver

Training is not mandatory for chaperones. However, it is recommended that you prepare for BF17 together with the novice driver. An information evening at the driving school, for example, is suitable for this purpose. It is aimed in particular at the accompanying person, explains their tasks and teaches them how to behave appropriately while driving.

Accompanying person as a competent contact person

The accompanying person is characterized by their many years of driving experience. Their presence should make the novice driver feel safer. The accompanying person is available to the driver as a competent contact person.

He or she observes the traffic carefully, supports the novice driver with comments if necessary and gives him or her feedback on his or her driving behavior, for example at the end of the journey. The accompanying person has no training function and may not interfere with driving.

Novice drivers - test certificate, alcohol ban & probationary period

Instead of a "card driver's license", 17-year-olds receive a "test certificate" on which the accompanying persons are noted. This certificate, together with an ID card, must always be carried by the novice driver when driving.

Of course, all BF17 participants are also subject to the absolute ban on alcohol until they are 21 years old.

The BF17 probationary period begins when the test certificate is issued. It lasts for two years, as with any initial car driving license. In the event of violations of road traffic regulations, the same measures are taken as during the probationary period for novice drivers with a conventional driving license.

Driving without an accompanying person

Driving without a companion is also a serious traffic offense. As a consequence, a fine will be imposed and the young driver's license will be revoked. This does not apply to the included categories AM and L. In addition, the probationary period is extended and the novice driver must attend an additional training course (advanced training seminar) for a fee.

A new driving license may be issued after six months at the earliest. However, if a test for the moped or driving license categories A1, AM, L or T has already been passed before the car driving training, these driving licenses remain valid.

  • The application can be submitted at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age of 17 years and only with the consent of the legal representatives.
  • Once your documents have been checked, we will issue the test order to the testing organization. Your driving school will be notified and can then register you for the test. The processing time for your application takes approx. 4 weeks.
  • Once you have passed the practical test, the examiner will issue and hand over a certificate for "accompanied driving from the age of 17". The test certificate is valid for a maximum of 3 months after you turn 18.
  • Once you reach the age of 18, you can drive category B motor vehicles without an accompanying person with the test certificate until you receive your driving license.
  • When you reach the age of 18, we will order your driving license from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The driving license will be sent to you directly by post (the cost of postage cannot be avoided).
  • Passport or identity card
  • Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
  • Confirmation from the driving school you have registered with
  • Proof of sufficient eyesight: certificate from an optician or ophthalmologist
  • Proof of participation in a first aid course in accordance with § 19 FeV
  • Application for "accompanied driving from the age of 17" with a copy of the identity card or passport (all pages) of the legal guardian
  • if only one parent has custody, please enclose the negative certificate from the youth welfare office
  • one supplementary sheet per accompanying person (see downloads) with a copy of the driver's license and identity card or passport (all pages)
