Information on the class C driving license

Prerequisites

You have your main residence in Jena. You are of the required minimum age or will reach it in the near future.

Application

It is not possible to apply by proxy, as the driving license card contains your signature, which must be provided at the time of application. You do not have to fill out an application form. It is created by us and simply signed by you.

Apply online

You also have the option of applying online to the driving license authority for a C-class extension. To do this, please have your old driver's license ready, as you will need to enter the data accordingly. Please note that - to avoid queries - you must always answer the information in the health questionnaire with NO or YES (then with further information).

To ensure that your application is processed quickly and smoothly, it is advantageous to enter your e-mail address and telephone number on the application form when submitting your application. This will enable us to shorten the information process.

Procedure for extending your driving license

• The application should be submitted at the earliest 6 months before reaching the minimum age.
• Once your documents have been checked, we will issue the test order to the test organization. Your driving school will be notified and can then register you for the test. The processing time for your application is approx. 4 weeks.
• Once you have passed the practical test, the examiner will issue you with a provisional certificate of driving authorization and confiscate your old driver's license. The testing organization will inform us that you have passed the test. We will then order your driving license from the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. The driving license will be sent to you directly by post (the cost of postage cannot be avoided).

• Passport or identity card
• Photograph: Please bring a photograph that is not older than three months and complies with biometric regulations. The photo must be 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size. You can find out what the photo must look like on the Bundesdruckerei website (see links)
• Driver's license: If the existing driver's license was not issued by the city of Jena, a file card copy from the foreign driver's license authority that issued the driver's license is required. Please request the file card copy yourself from the relevant driving license authority and have it sent directly to us or sent by fax. If you still have an old driving license (grey/pink), you must also apply to exchange it for the new card driving license when you apply for a driving license for passenger transport. In this case, please note the information on "Exchange to the EU card driver's license".
• Proof of driving licenses issued in the former GDR from 1968 to 1982 ("VK 30" index card)
• Confirmation from the driving school where you registered
• Proof of sufficient eyesight: Proof by means of an expert opinion or certificate from an ophthalmologist or an occupational physician - an issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for two years
• Proof of medical fitness: Proof must be provided in the form of a certificate from a doctor of your choice, taking into account Annex 5 of the Driving License Ordinance. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application. The form to be completed by the doctor is available under Downloads.
• Proof of first aid: Proof of first aid training

The fee includes the cost of a driving license. If you are applying for several categories, it may be necessary for you to obtain several provisional proofs of driving authorization or driving licenses for the respective categories you have obtained by the time you take the final test. This would incur additional fees.
